The process of regeneration and renewal is sometimes time-consuming and difficult. At other times it is as simple as receiving outside recognition and confirmation of value. Winning awards is fun and bout de papier has just won its sixth award (and the third international award for creativity).

Readers will be pleased to learn that once again bout has won the 1992 Certificate of Distinction from the Art Direction Magazine of New York at Creativity ’92.

This is a major honor. To win the award once is prestigious in itself; but to do so three time in rapid succession is a real commendation! We won the Certificate of Distinction in a multimedia international event which draws entrants from around the world. All the winning entries will be displayed later at the Creativity Show in New York and also in Creativity 21, an annual publication showcasing the winners from around the world.

As a reminder for readers of the winning edition, we have reproduced its cover (Spring, Volume 8, Number 3). The issue was designed by Acart Graphic Services Inc. of Ottawa under the art direction of John Staresinic and the design talent of Nancy Boland. The cover photograph was taken by Carol Walker (who now uses her maiden name Hart) while on assignment in Bolivia and Peru. bout de papier’s two previous Art Direction Awards were received in 1989 for Volume 6, Number I which featured the cover photograph of parasols in Chiang Mai, Thailand taken by Liza Linklater, and in 1990 for Volume 7, Number 3 which featured the cover photograph of tribal flute players in Brazil taken by Michael Small.

It really is a pleasure to be Editor of such a fun publication and to have the opportunity to work with such a diverse range of fascinating people and subjects. The success of the magazine ultimately depends upon you, the reader; you, the contributor, and you, the advertiser. Our Editorial Boards are composed of unpaid and unsung volunteers who give their personal time freely to obtaining and editing the material in the magazine. It is a team effort which requires much work, but the results speak for themselves.

A grant from PAFSO and the revenue obtained from our advertisers and subscribers keep the magazine alive and well and publishing in Ottawa. When you use the services of one of our advertisers, let them know that you saw their advertisement in bout de papier. This is one way that they can tell whether their investment has an effect. So please do not be shy—say you “saw it first in bout de papier”.

I would also encourage members of the Foreign Service to buy subscriptions of bout for their families. To do so is an investment in your own future. If nothing else, it saves you a few letters home by helping to tell the folks what you do for a living. We know that every copy of the magazine which sits on someone’s coffee table is actually read by ten other individuals, be they friends, relatives, neighbours or visitors. It is in your interest, the department’s and that of the Foreign Service to help spread the word far and wide. As a subscriber, colleagues retiring and those on leave from the department can continue to contribute to bout de papier while keeping up to date with your colleagues and their activities in the Foreign Service.

In closing off the notebook for this issue, I would like to highlight the recent appointment of bout de papier’s Managing Editor, Debra Hulley, to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Magazine Publishers Association. Other CMPA directors are: Jeffrey Shearer, Publisher and Chief Operating Officer, Saturday Night; Lynn Cunningham, Executive Editor, Toronto Life; Michael Crawford, Executive Editor, Canadian Lawyer, Diane Davy, Executive Vice- President, Young Naturalists Foundation Heather Elton, Editor, Dance Connection; Terry Gray, Circulation and Business Manager, Royal Geographic Society; Jane Hamilton, Managing Editor, The Capilano Review; Paul Jones, Executive Vice- President, CB Media; Caren King, Vice- President Circulation, Telemedia; Judy MacDonald, Managing Editor, This Magazine; Scott Milsom, Editor, New Maritimes; Jean Paré, President, Les Magazines Maclean Hunter, Québec and Editor in Chief, L’actualité.

Of Treasures and Trophies

In my own case, as a result of being Editor of bout de papier for the last two years and having edited the “Managing Your Money” column over the past five years, I was invited to join the Board of Directors of Tradex Management Inc., a group of mutual funds founded by and open only to members of the federal public service and one of our advertisers. This is quite an honour because, according to a recent Globe and Mail business article, fewer than five per cent of board members across all financial institutions in Canada are women
