The reign of 20th century millennial hype is finally officially over and we are in the blissful period between the beginning of the new century and the start of the next round of early reservations at revolving restaurants for the next centennial new year. The real millennium has finally arrived and we can now begin our journey across that bridge to the 21st century.
So instead of looking ahead, ’d like look back. Not at what was, but at who was. And take a moment to remember our colleagues. For the many who knew Nancy Stiles, Y2K and the new millennium will always carry special meaning. The tributes in this issue to her and Linda Berry are testaments to lives lived and are painful good-byes to wonderful colleagues. And for all the others we have worked with who are no longer with us, let us begin the new century by remembering those who are no longer with us and acknowledge the sacrifices they made and the personal and professional legacies they have left behind. The beginning of the millennium also touched our community in a profound way as we remember Catherine MacLean, who, among her other extraordinary accomplishments, was a labour lawyer for PAFSO during the 1980s. The first courageous steps in establishing a transparent process to prevent further tragedies have been taken. It is up to all of us to walk the next steps together to re-establish public trust in the institution of diplomacy.
And finally, the new year is a chance to welcome a new team. Since January, we have had a talented group of interns working with us at bout de papier. Their prime directive is to create the bout de papier website, which we hope to launch in late spring. Since the market has dashed our IPO dreams, we have resorted to Plan B— to create the site within the current funding envelope we receive from PAFSO. These interns will also contribute the occasional article to bout, and I hope you will enjoy their perspective. Their names are listed in our editorial masthead and I know you will join me in thanking them for their contribution to our community. We also have two FSDP colleagues who have joined our team – welcome Richard Martin and Cindy Kleiman. I would also like to welcome Ben Rowswell and Kevin O’Shea (back) to our editorial advisory board. Ben’s inaugural contribution to our new column, Notional Unity/L’idée d’unité, is a measured reflection of the notion of identity and our relationship to things like states and countries. Now there’s a bridge to the 21st century.
