Dear Editor:

Re: “Over the Volcano” (bout, Summer 1998) and my alternative reality.

Looking back through his queasiness darkly, Nicholas Coghlan recalls that everyone was physically repelled by the prospect of drinking Dave’s champagne atop Orizaba. Not so. Champagne did indeed wet my lips.

As I recall, my preoccupation wasn’t so much any altitude sickness as the thought I and my knees were going to have to get back down. Plus, with the air pressure at that height and Dave having jounced the bottle at every step from I a.m. to 12:30 p.m., most of the champagne erupted into foamy nothingness anyway.

I was perfectly agreeable to a drink at the bottom, though. Alas, Dave had no second surprise to pull out of his pack.

Elizabeth Gammell Ottawa

P.S. In my alternative version of reality, the bottle also was at least a magnum, if not a jereboam.
