PAFSO Professional Committee activities have been picking up and I am pleased to announce an excellent line up of Breakfast Seminars for the coming months.
For those of you unfamiliar with these early bird events, a few brief words on the Committee and its activities is appropriate. The Professional Committee is an informal group of staff in the Department of External Affairs dedicated to organizing events of interest to the Department’s members. Increasingly popular are the Committee’s informal breakfast seminars featuring guest speakers on a wide variety of topical issues. They aim to broaden horizons by promoting and stimulating open and lively discussions. Breakfast seminars begin at 8:30 a.m. and are held in the Crush Auditorium of L.B. Pearson Building, 125 Sussex Drive. They usually consist of a 30 minute presentation followed by a 30 minute Question and Answer period
Recent breakfast meetings, which were well attended include: NATO Secretary General, Manfred Woerner, on “The NATO Alliance”, ADM for Communications, Peter Daniel, on “Off and On the Record with the Press”; and Canada’s Ambassador to the PRC, Earl Drake, on “China”.
Our fall preview promises a continuation of this high quality roster for our breakfast seminars:
Under-Secretary of State, James H. Taylor, on The Paris Economic Summit: What it achieved”;
British Cabinet Office, Soviet Affairs Advisor, Martin Nicholson, on “Is
Perestroika irreversible?”;
Other forthcoming topics (dates to be confirmed):
“Implications of Japan as the World’s Largest Aid Donor”, “Demographics and the Future Role of Quebec”;
“Drug Trafficking and its Foreign Policy Implications”;
“The Labor Movement and Foreign Policy”, “The North and Foreign Policy Issues of the 1990’s”;
“How are we doing on environment issues”, and “Canada-USA Free Trade Agreement: Early returns”. fall, by popular demand, will be further John Cleese management training films on “Organization/Management Skills”. There will also be a panel discussion on “Fiscal Restraint: Implications for the Department’
