Diplomatic “Corpse”

Immunity! Immunity! what’s happened to immunity?
There was a time when the ’Corps’ was thought a privileged community!
But now we have to take our chance
Of gun or bomb – “Pauvre Excellence!”
And not to mention Fer-de-Lance
They get us with impunity!
With all those cocktails that we quaff
There comes, perhaps, a ’molotoff”.
And though we take what care we can
Those canapés are often “off’.
We’re battened on by every pest,
Amoeba germs and all the rest,
Yet try to do our little best
Before we are quite “polished off!”
In regions red, whence knighthood’s fled,
A head of post was lately bled,
In other climes the price is set
At fifteen thugs for one poor “head”
So when those estimates you freeze,
And every single dollar squeeze —
Could you — we pray — consider please:
Some danger money ere we’re dead?
— Evelyn Munro, 1970

Poems

Smooth skin
ripe red and gold
soft, firm
smelling of musk, of heat
plump flesh promising pleasure in
ambrosia of golden juice
gift of gods
one does not eat it
one becomes one with it.
First the cheeks
sensuous texture
sweet firm succulence
yielding to increasing desire
strip skin to reveal the centre in
glorious musk of gold pink flesh
you are no mere fruit
you are an emotional experience,
mango!
– Terry Jones
