On this 75th anniversary of the Department of External Affairs, let me pay tribute to the men and women of the Foreign Service.
It is the people who have made it their career to whom successive governments owe much for the esteem in which Canada is held throughout the world.
This is my second time in the portfolio of Secretary of State for External Affairs. From both the 1974-76 period and my present tenure, I have memories of good work with professionals both at home and abroad.
As the Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers approaches its 20th anniversary and the Professional Committee marks its first birthday, I congratulate them for their part in seeking to further develop a professional cadre of officers. The breakfast meetings, luncheons and other activities indicate the measure of the Foreign Service’s commitment to excellence in the service of Canada.
The Honourable Allan J. MacEachen
