Ralph served as a Flight Lieutenant in the RCAF from 1940-45. He joined External Affairs in 1950 and served in several European posts before being appointed Ambassador to Ethiopia and concurrently to Madagascar and Somalia in 1971 and in 1975 as Ambassador to Costa Rica and concurrently to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Panama. He retired in 1985 and, after a cheerful and stout-hearted battle with cancer, died in Ottawa on February 4, 1994. He is survived by his wife, Louise, four children, and ten grandchildren.
