I refer to the John Watkins letter to John Holmes that was published in your Vol. 23, No. 3, where you indicate that there was an addition on the left margin referring to a lunch “at the Gardens (Gordons?).” I am not sure whether you accept letters to the editor, but assuming you do, you might wish to consider publishing the following:
I wonder if I might add a postscript to John Watkins’s letter to John Holmes that was published in your latest issue.
You indicate that there was an addition on the left margin of the letter referring to a lunch “the Gardens (Gordons?)” and “Janice … picking me up in the car.” During our posting in France in the mid-1960s, we saw a good deal of John Watkins, who was an old friend. After his first heart attack in the summer of 1964, we used to visit him at the embassy residence and at the Stones’ house in Recloses, where the Légers spent some time in those years, or have lunch or dinner with him in Paris.
As a result, I think it is almost certain that it was not the Gardens or Gordons with whom John was to lunch that day, but the Yaldens, and that the Janice who was picking him up was my wife.
