Mel Hurtig is owner of Hurtig Publishers, which is based in Edmonton. A charter member of the Committee for an Independent Canada, Mr. Hurtig is a vocal critic of closer economic links with the United States. His company recently published the three-volume Canadian Encyclopaedia.
