Not all messages published on the Department’s intranet receive the same level of attention or create enthusiasm among employees. However, the publication of « Some Principles » in October 2015 by now-Deputy Minister Peter Boehm inspired many colleagues in the Department, and one of them, Cael Husband, suggested that it be reprinted in bout de papier for the benefit of a larger audience. While this is not regular practice, the editorial board felt compelled to do so, given the value for our readership.
Ces dix grands principes ont été rédigés par M. Boehm pour guider les chefs de mission dans leur rôle mais plusieurs de ces principes s’appliquent aussi aux autres employés en poste à l’étranger. Ils nous rappellent les standards élevés de professionnalisme et de leadership dont nous devons faire preuve à tout moment. Ces principes ne devraient pas seulement nous guider à l’étranger, mais aussi à la centrale, voire même dans nos vies personnelles.
En effet, le leadership, le professionnalisme, l’intelligence émotionnelle et l’engagement sont des qualités que plusieurs FS, encore actifs ou a la retraite, démontrent aussi dans leurs activités communautaires, au Canada ou ailleurs dans le monde. Our engagement with our community may take several forms. Douglas Small, one of the longest-serving board members of bout de papier was a great example of this commitment to the foreign service. More than 25 years after he retired, he was still contributing to the FS community by helping with the PAFSO Awards, serving on the bout de papier editorial board and running the Retired Heads of Mission Association (RHOMA) for five years as its Chairman. As his son Michael Small said with regards to his father’s commitment to the Department, “He had an abiding interest in the health of that institution and in how it was treating its people”. Our engagement with our community may take several forms. For instance, on many occasions during my first posting in Indonesia I tried to rescue abandoned kittens, some of them in very unhealthy situations… Talking with friends and colleagues from the Department, I realised that several of us had similar stories of rescued cats and dogs, and that many of these four-legged companions have played important roles in our postings abroad and often became integral parts of our families. Anne-Marie Leclerc accepted to take the lead in collecting several testimonies of colleagues who adopted pets abroad for your reading pleasure.
MCOs know too well about commitment towards their community and clients since they are constantly providing assistance and advice to Canadians abroad.
