Ecrire son dernier éditorial, c’est un peu comme rédiger une note de transition avant de quitter un poste à l’étranger. On cherche à la fois l’éloquence et la simplicité, on veut être concis tout en laissant à son successeur toute l’information dont il aura besoin pour porter vers de nouveaux sommets les projets amorcés. C’est aussi un moment de réflexion où on se félicite du travail accompli, mais où on se souvient également de tout ce qu’on aurait voulu réaliser, sans en avoir finalement eu le temps ou les ressources nécessaires. C’est le moment de lâcher prise et de confier à un autre les dossiers qui nous ont portés au cours des dernières années. C’est le temps des au revoir, avant de se lancer à la conquête de nouveaux défis!

for the magazine. When I took the helm of the magazine in 2015, we were receiving very few submissions by FS, which was a recurring concern for the Editorial Board. In the last year, no less than 31 articles were written by FS, with more than 55 FS contributing to the magazine in one form or another. These included several MCOs, now officially part of Canada’s Foreign Service, as well as a number of new FS recruits. Increasing the participation of FS in bout was the main objective I had set for myself when I took over the editorship, and I am proud to say: mission accomplished!
Malgré ces succès, je dois quand-même vous confier que pendant mes deux années à la barre de bout de papier, j’ai passé un nombre assez phénoménal d’heures à travailler dans l’ombre sur le magazine, bien souvent en solitaire… Je discutais avec une collègue récemment rentrée d’une micro-mission en Afrique et nous tissions en riant les multiples parallèles entre son expérience et la mienne. En théorie, elle aurait dû pouvoir compter sur le support de nombreux collègues, mais en réalité, elle se sentait plus souvent qu’autrement seule, à l’autre bout du monde, à ramer en solo sans le renfort tant souhaité. Malheureusement, plus de la moitié des articles qui nous sont promis pour bout de papier ne sont jamais livrés par leurs auteurs. À tous ceux qui me doivent encore des ébauches, tenez-vous le pour dit, j’ai passé vos noms à mon successeur pour qu’il puisse vous relancer!

Karkaria from IRCC, who recounts his experience at the heart of Operation Syrian Refugees. Several FS from IRCC and GAC contributed to these efforts to resettle 25,000 Syrian to Canada, and we thought that it was important for bout de papier to publish a first-hand testimony of this important endeavor.
Not surprisingly, one of the biggest challenges for the Editorial Board, however, remains the digitalization of the magazine. As we noted before, the print-only media world we inhabit is shrinking and journals that adapt and thrive generate a real digital footprint. I can assure you that with our limited resources, this is easier said than done. bout continues to look into what is realistically achievable in the near and longer terms, from copyright issues in a social media savvy world to a digital archive, so that our past is made accessible to the future. The digitalization of bout de papier will be led by Christian Ranger, who has also volunteered to be the next Editor of the magazine. Bon succès Christian!
Comme pour toute bonne note de transition, je me dois de souligner ici les contacts incontournables pour mon successeur. D’abord et avant tout, c’est a Debra Hulley que nous devons la continuité de bout de papier. Sans son aide aussi soutenue que précieuse, le magazine ne pourrait exister.
