bout de papier, Vol. 3, No. 2 (1985) — Summer 1985 // Été 1985, p. 39

Take a look at this list:

MENACHEM, REV. C.L. DODGSON (the mathematical minister), FIDEL, MARIE AND PIERRE, VASCO, ALIGHIERI, SIGMUND,
BUCKMINSTER, Lt.Col. (now Senator) JOHN, GERMAINE, ERNESTO “CHE”, Swift’s LEMUEL, ENVER (of Tirana), JOMO,
RUDYARD, TSE-TUNG or ZEDONG, COTTON, YUKIO, Dr. GUNNAR, FRIDTJOF (of the Arctic), Sir ISAAC, MORDECAI,
ALEKSANDR I., Sir Edmund’s NORGAY, JOSIP BROZ, Petrograd’s LEV BRONSTEIN, Bishop DESMOND, SAMUEL L.
CLEMENS, FRANCOIS-MARIE AROUET, LECH

Each item is part of a well-known name or (in five cases) the real name of a man with a well-known alias. Some items also mention titles or other clues. The list is in alphabetical order according to the missing names or aliases. There are two men from the USSR, one Frenchman and a French couple, four Englishmen (including the one fictional character on the list) and four Americans; all other countries have but one representative.

To solve the puzzle, work out the thirty missing names-aliases and use them to fill in the chart, one name per box, making sure that the name fits the appropriate categories both by row and by column.

It is rumoured A Aalto spent 24 hours working this one out.

bout de papier will pay $25 to the author of the first correct entry drawn on Sept. 15, 1985. In the event that no completely correct entries are received (shame, shame), the drawing will be held among those tied for the highest score.
