(BREE recently paid tripetato me aid tribute to the dear former friend and colleague, Mehul “Mike” Shah by naming two one-time bursaries for studies at the College of Europe, Belgium in his memory.
Created under BREEC’s 25th anniversary of Canada-EU relations strategy, the bursaries worth $8000 each, were awarded in June 2002 to Jan Rovny of McGill University and Charles Boisvert of the University of British Columbia. The recipients were selected by the European Community Studies Association — Canada, who ran a nation-wide competition for the bursaries on behalf of the Mission. Both students have successfully enrolled in the Masters program in Political and Administrative Studies at the College of Europe, which begins in Bruges next fall.

2001, was suggested by his successor at BREEC, Jennifer McKeen. Shah spent three productive years as a political officer at BREEC from 1996-99, in what would turn out to be his first and only posting, before returning to EBT and a promotion to deputy director: During his time at BREEC, he took on Canada-EU relations with the same enthusiasm and dedication for which he was known throughout the department. He also made a lasting impression on his colleagues and, while many have since moved on to other assignments, he will certainly not be forgotten by the locally engaged staff with whom he had a very good rapport. To anyone who had ever worked with Mike Shah, naming the bursaries in his memory seemed an obvious choice.
Mike’s family knew better than anyone the pride he took in being a part of Canada’s foreign service and readily consented to the use of his name for the Mehul (Mike) Shah Memorial Bursaries. Mike’s brother Samir Shah acknowledged that they were a fitting tribute to Mike’s dedication to making Canada and the world a better place.
Like the students who were eventually selected to study at the College of Europe in his name, Mike Shah also attended the College for professional training during his posting in Brussels. As one who loved a challenge and a good debate, Mike would have greatly enjoyed his time there. For Rovny and Boisvert, the Masters program will enable them to gain a deepened understanding of Europe in all of its complexity, knowledge which they will later apply in their chosen careers in Canada.
